Periyar National Park Travel Guide

Bird

All set for a jungle holiday? Periyar Tiger Reserve, Thekkady is your dream destination! Nestled in the southern region of the Western Ghats, spread across an area of 777 sq. km of forest land, Periyar Tiger Reserve is home to an abundant collection of different species of flora and fauna. This breathtaking stretch of forest derives its name from the River Periyar which originates deep inside the reserve.

Elephants

The Periyar Tiger Reserve is considered as the most protected area for the Elephants and Tigers in India. The Tiger Reserve was the hunting ground of the Travancore kings in the 18th and 19th centuries. In 1978, the sanctuary was included in the Central Government initiative and was renamed as Periyar Tiger Reserve, Today, the Reserve offers a host of eco-tourism programs to the travelers.

When the Mullaperiyar Dam was constructed across the river Periyar an artificial lake was created in the area and the landscape and the features of the valley changed drastically. The picturesque artificial lake which lies at the heart of the sanctuary adds to the charm of the Tiger Reserve and is a real crowd-puller! The tropical evergreen forest has an extremely thick tree cover where sun-rays hardly penetrate and the trees grow to amazing heights up to 130-140 feet. Rare medicinal herbs are also found in these forests.

The Reserve forest is home to Elephants, Tigers, the rare Nilgiri Tahr, lion-tailed Macaque, Nilgiri Langur, Wild Pigs, Sambar, Gaur, Mouse Deer, Dole or Barking Deer, Indian Wild Dog, Gee’s Golden Langur, Common Langur, and Bonnet Macaque & wild butterflies.
